Visit of TPF's CEO to the Neves Corvo Mine in Portugal

This enriching visit highlighted the importance of managing risks associated with tailings storage facilities, a critical challenge for the mining industry and an area in which TPF takes great interest and has specific expertise. 

On Tuesday, September 17, TPF's CEO, Thomas Spitaels, visited the Neves Corvo underground mine, operated by the Portuguese company Somincor. He was accompanied by Gonçalo Tavares, COO of TPF Consultores, Mafalda Oliveira, Head of the Dams and Tailings Departement, and Hugo Alves, Operational Manager of the same department at Somincor.  Located in Castro Verde, the mine produces mainly copper, zinc and lead concentrates. It is the largest active mine in Portugal.

Our Portuguese subsidiary, acting as Engineer of Record (EoR), is responsible for inspecting the Cerro de Lobo tailings storage facilities and reviewing the documentation. The objective is to ensure that the facilities are designed, constructed, and modified in compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards, as well as with applicable regulations, laws, and guidelines. This contract is also a testament to the long-standing relationship of trust between TPF and Somincor.

The day before, Thomas Spitaels visited the TPF Consultores’ headquarters in Lisbon, where he met with the CEO, Carlos Baião and the members of the Executive Committee. The morning sessions provided an opportunity to Thomas to highlight the Group's development, its core values, and recent performance. Afternoon discussions focused on the strategic and commercial direction of the Portuguese subsidiary, particularly regarding the development of international markets such as Angola, Algeria, Mozambique, and Senegal. The day concluded with a presentation of the Innovation and Information and Communication Technologies Center.
